Often sweet, port wine is frequently misunderstood by the average wine drinker. However, its history dates back to Roman times.<\/p><p>Made with grapes grown on the high-terraced banks of the Duoro River, port wine is blended from several grapes\u2014but mostly from Touriga Nacional, Tina Roriz, Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca, Tinta Cao, and Tinta Baroca.<\/p><p>During fermentation, once the wine reaches the desired sugar level, the fermentation is stopped by adding grape brandy to the wine. This is called fortification. Within those categories, you\u2019ll find several styles, each distinguished by the length of aging and other factors.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-49d16586 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"49d16586\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-563917a0\" data-id=\"563917a0\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49289480 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"49289480\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Bottle-Aged Port Wine<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-283fcc92 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"283fcc92\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Deeply colored, dense, and opaque, the flavors and aromas of bottle-aged port range from dark berry fruit and licorice to rich, decadent plum pudding and mince pie.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-773a781 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"773a781\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><strong>Vintage Port<\/strong> is only made in \u201cdeclared\u201d vintages, meaning it isn\u2019t produced unless the crop was exceptional throughout the region. Vintage port is aged for two years in barrel before bottling and can last up to 100 years.<\/li><li><strong>Single-Quinta Vintage Port<\/strong> is a port wine made from a single property but not necessarily in a declared vintage. Usually, a Single Quinta Vintage denotes exceptional quality.<\/li><li><strong>Late-Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port<\/strong> is vintage-dated and is aged from four to six years in barrel before bottling and often longer in bottle before release. It\u2019s much less expensive than Vintage Port, and it doesn\u2019t have to follow \u201cdeclared\u201d years.<\/li><li><strong>Ruby Port<\/strong> is a simple, youthful, unaged, non-vintage port. Non-vintage means it could be blended from wines coming from several different vintages.<\/li><li><strong>Crusted Port<\/strong> is non-vintage, unfiltered, and often casts a sediment, imitating vintage ports at a lower price.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-23ced38 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"23ced38\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3d2989b\" data-id=\"3d2989b\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2f7d106 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2f7d106\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Barrell-Aged Port Wine<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24088e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24088e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Wood-aged port has an entirely different flavor profile than bottle-aged examples because they are aged in barrel. Here, you\u2019ll find nutty overtones, like hazelnut, nut butter, butterscotch, cr\u00e8me brul\u00e9e, and brown sugar.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67b7bed elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67b7bed\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><strong>Tawny Port<\/strong> is a general catch-all term for wood-aged port. It\u2019s primarily non-vintage (except for Colheita) and is usually labeled according to the minimum age of wines in the blend.<\/li><li><strong>Colheita<\/strong> is the cr\u00e8me de la cr\u00e8me of all tawny ports. It\u2019s vintage-dated and aged for a minimum of seven years before release.
